Special Award 2007

Dr Christina Lundgren

Christina Lundgren (1970) was awarded the Old Girls’ Award for Excellence on Speech Day 2007.

Christina was invited to be the Guest Speaker at the 2007 High School Speech Day. She was Head Girl in 1970 and after school, she spent a year in California as an AFS Scholar and then she returned to study medicine at the University of Cape Town, specialising in anaesthetics. In 2001 Christina was awarded the Hugh van Hasselt Medal for “Services to Anaesthia in Gauteng” by the Anaesthetic Foundation. This award is decided on by anaesthetic peers.

She is presently registered for a PhD at the University of Witwatersrand. Her thesis covers “an investigation and assessment of procedure-related deaths in the Greater Johannesburg area”. As an Honorary Life Member of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists, she is currently actively involved with the World Congress of Anaesthesia to be held in Cape Town in March 2008. She held the position of National President from March 2004 to March 2006 and is also Past President of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa. In her current employment, she holds two leadership roles.

Firstly, she is Chief Specialist and Head of Department in the Department of Anaesthesia at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Secondly, since 2003, she has held a part-time position as Clinical Head of Anaesthesia at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Together with Dr Russell Britz, she founded the Liver Transplant Service three years ago.

Her special medical interests include cardiothoracic, liver, neuro and vascular anaesthesia. Christina speaks six languages and her hobbies and interests include fly fishing, cooking, flower arranging, gardening, bird-watching and photography.

We invite nominations for this award – Nominees must have achieved outstanding success in any field of endeavour, professionally, culturally, in sport or the humanities. It is likely that the chosen candidate’s achievements will be world class and this award will only be made if a suitable candidate is nominated. She must have matriculated at SMDSG or SMDSG must have been her last school.
