More than 60 yrs ago, Mary Beningfield planted a Flat Crown tree on the school grounds, adjacent to the car park at the school reception. It grew into a magnificent tree that provided shade for many girls at tea and lunch over the years. Several years ago, a branch fell and damaged three cars causing much concern and more recently a tree expert was called in to assess its 'health'. Sadly, it was found to be 90% rotten and had to be felled. Mary was asked to plant another tree in its place - a special moment that must have brought back many memories. |

I would like to include my name in the St Mary's Old Girls network. I studied there between 1986 and 1993, from Standard 3 until Standard 9. Owing to my father's promotion with the international company, Tetra Pak, I moved with my family to Lausanne, Switzerland, in August 1993. I completed the International Baccalaureate at the International School of Geneva, La Chataigneraie, in July 1995. From 1995 until 1998, I completed a Joint Honours degree in Politics and International Studies at The University of Warwick. From 1998-1999, I completed a Masters in International Journalism (Broadcast) at City University. I returned to Switzerland to work for four years at The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, namely for Swiss Radio International and swissinfo.org. Since February 2004, have been working at the World Economic Forum in Geneva, as Senior Media Manager.
I have a younger sister, Gail Tonkin, who studied at St Mary's from 1991 until 1993. Gail has just graduated from the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne with a BSc. Janlyn Falconer attended St Mary's from 1993-1996 (Std 1- Std 4) before emigrating to New Zealand. They moved to Australia in 1987 where sadly Robin passed away in 1989. Two of her three children live in Australia, but Heather still lives locally in Westville. She is now engaged to be married to Peter Kay and is in regular contact with Jenepher Hodge (nee Leftwich) 1948 and Pam Ralph (nee Brown) 1953. Bronwyn Laas (nee Horne, formerly Hogg) - 1976 - After spending 2½ years on her own at her Vaal River house after the death of her husband in early 2000, she moved back to Sandton and got back into business just over a year ago. She has retained her house at the Vaal which she, and her new husband, Johan Laas of Idols fame, use at weekends. She goes by the name Hogg in her business which is in the photographic and recording industry. Sue Raven (nee Philip) - 1983 - lives in Hermanus with her husband Chris, and they have 2 sons, Cameron (7) and Daniel (6 months). After living in the UK for 14 years, they came over for the millenium and stayed on in SA to bring up their boys in the sunshine. Michelle Di Marco (nee Bonnet) - 1983 - is the Marketing and Communications Director at St. Mary's (a welcome move to have an Old Girl in this position). She is married to Raoul and lives in Gillitts. Their son Alex (5) started at Highbury this year and Micaela (3) is in the wings for St. Mary's. Carolyn Jones - 1983 - graduated from Wits in 1989 with a MBBCh then practised as a GP in Benoni until 1997 when she returned to University to study Psychiatry and graduated in 2001. She emigrated to Canada in September 2001 with her husband, Bryant, and 2 children Laura Beth (6) and Luke (4). They live in a small town where she is the only Psychiatrist servicing a community of about 45000 people. Sue Woock (nee Butcher) - 1983 - attended North Carolina State University on a swimming scholarship after leaving school and received a BSc in Applied Maths in 1989. Nicky Sporre - (nee Judd) - 1989 - Married Grant who she met at the end of matric, at SMDSG in March 2004. They have been living in Godalming in the UK for over 5 years. She is loving being a Procurement Consultant for ISS UK and Grant is an Equities Analyst for UBS Investment Bank in London. They both work really long hours, but love travelling the globe when they get a chance to take leave and try to visit friends and family back in SA whenever they can. Jeanine Toro (Cox) - 1992 - lives in Maryland and works as a Business Diane Malan - 1998 - After finishing school, she went to Australia as a Rotary International Exchange Student and now lives in Sydney with her mother who emigrated a few years ago. She is studying at Macquarie University to become a Primary Education Specialist. She was head prefect of house and she completed her A levels in June 2001. Her subjects were Maths, Science and Biology, receiving the highest Biology mark in Scotland. She has been accepted into Liverpool University to study Medicine at age 17 in conjunction with a computerised Medical course. 1998 Claire Scott has spent time teaching art, handwork, computers and music at primary school level. She has travelled extensively in the United States and has worked as an au pair during this time. She is presently studying English, Psychology and Communications through Unisa. Rebecca Crouse (1998) passed her Cecchetti Teacher's Ballet examination with distinction. She is studying ballet at UCT and is about to enter her honours year. She danced the lead role in a ballet danced by UCT students in November 2001. 1997 Lorissa Shepstone is the Assistant Artistic Director for Arizona State University Theatre Department, as well as Head State Manager and House Manager. She has been into two Honours Societies - The National Honours Collegiate and Alpha Beta Phi. She will be moving to Boston to study at Smith College and will then pursue a Master's Degree at Harvard. She is engaged to Gordon Clemmons and will be getting married in 2002 after she has graduated. Wendy de Goede (1997) graduated cum laude in BSc Dietetics from The University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. She is now doing postgraduate studies at the same university and doing her internship at Addington Hospital. 1996 Nicole Mason née Pistorius was married to Maurice Mason in September 1998. They have been living in Johannesburg for two years. She has recently taken over her late father's business. She has had a highly successful and illustrious four years while completing her degree and was the winner of numerous coveted awards, competitions and bursaries. Shannon has been incredibly blessed and continues her violin career playing in a professional quartet while also working for an organisation that fosters the development of music in schools. Her job involves both teaching and organising music workshops and liasing between Orchestra and music centres. Her company is sponsoring her further studies at the Guild Hall School of Music. 1995 Nicky Rowan completed a BSc in Human Movement at Stellenbosch University and presently works for Pfizer Laboratories marketing their cardio vascular equipment. 1995 Bronwen Whitcombe was named the regional winner in the Eastern Cape of the 2000 Corobrik Regional Student Architect of the Year Award. She took the regional prize with a project titled Global -E-Advertising, an electronic advertising facility. Caroline Colman (1995) successfully completed her MBCHB at UCT in 2001. She will be working at King Edward Hospital from January 2001. Suzanne Bosworth (1995) is currently working as a Deskside Support Team Leader for IBM based at ICI Headquarters in Millbank, Central London. She lives in Windsor and would love to hear from any of the girls from her year at suzanne_bosworth@ici.com 1993 Melanie Watts née de Witt married Brian Watts in May 1997 and they are now the proud parents of Steven Brett born on 12 February 2001. Melanie has a B.Compt degree and runs her own Accounting business from home and Brian is a property developer in the Kloof area. Tracy Munro (nee Troughton 1993) married Ernest Munro on 21 February 1998 and lived in Kloof until leaving for Ascot, England in1999. Whilst still in South Africa she trained as a skin care technologist and had her own salon for five years. In England she worked for Yves Rocher in Windsor as their head therapist and then managed their Reading branch. She has since moved to another company, which has branches in Ascot and Sunningdale. 1993 Genevieve McArty (nee Franco) After having spent seven years living in Chicago she is now living in Los Angeles, California where she has a career in Marketing and Advertising. In April she married Bryan McArty. Kirsty Moller was her Maid of Honour. 1992 Dr Regan Crookes was awarded her doctorate in Chemical Engineering early in 2001 from University of Melbourne, Australia. She was awarded a scholarship to do a PhD after completing a BSc. Chemical Engineering at the University of Queensland, Brisbane. She is presently working for a French international chemical company as Senior Scientist in their advanced technology laboratory in New Jersey, USA. She lives near Princeton and is still a keen runner and swimmer and uses the university facilities. They then returned to her husband's hometown of Sanora, California. They have recently purchased their first home and are busy renovating. Gwynaeth van Aardt (1992) has been living in London for the past five years. She is currently working in the concert industry. She studied sound engineering. 1991 Brigid Goudie (nee Ryman) was married to Jeff in November 2000 and has settled in Kloof. She works at the Riverside Veterinary Clinic in Durban North where they specialise in birds and exotic animals. She is also involved in Puppy Socialisation courses for Vets in the greater Durban area. In 2000 she was voted the Hill's Vet Nurse of the Year. 1991 Diane Cumins is living in Victoria, BC, Canada and would very much like to make contact with other Old Girls. Thevendrie Brewer neé Naicker (1990) completed articles at Ernst & Young and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1998. She spent 9 months with Ernst & Young in their Amsterdam office and returned to take up a position as Audit Manager with them in Cape Town in June 1999. In February 2000, she married Grant Brewer and moved to Johannesburg. After a brief spell in Corporate Finance at Ernst & Young, she left to join Deutsche Bank in their Corporate Finance Division where she is currently employed. Tracey Martin (1990) was engaged to Mark Immelman in June 2001 and was married on 22 June 2002. The couple were married at Camps Orchards in Hillcrest but jetted back to Columbus, Georgia (USA) where they are currently living. Tracey is studying her MBA on a full scholarship at Columbus State University and works in Sports Marketing.

They have three sons, Michael (8), James (5) and Patrick who was born in March 2000. She has an Honours Degree in Marketing but has chosen to stay at home to raise her children. Angela Slater neé Slater (1986) is married, lives in Johannesburg and after working for some time as a bookkeeper/IT consultant, she has recently started her own IT company - "still very small but gaining clients fast". She has 3 children, Caitin (12), Daniel (7) and Micayla (2). 1985 Sarah Hean has obtained her PhD at Bristol University following her research at La Serena University in Chile. She has been appointed to Kings College, London researching Social Capital, which examines the collapse of social structures in modern society and how it affects the health of the community. 1985 Stephanie Ker works for an international charity called 'Befrienders International' based in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey, England. This charity has been going for 25 years independently and another 25 as part of a big UK charity - they work to reduce the incidence of suicide by developing volunteer run crisis centres. Her role is to support and develop member centres around the world. She does a lot of travelling to implement the training. 1979 Belinda Davies has been elected vice-chairman of KZN Women in Business. Rowan Foster (nee Ford 1976) is living in Australia. She has two sons Thomas 10 and Robert 8. 1975 Joanne Chaplin née Souchon is living on the Gold Coast of Australia near Brisbane. She is doing locum work as a Physiotherapist and her husband, Andy, has acquired an agency to distribute bottled water on the Gold Coast. Their children Paula (Gr 11), Justin (Gr 9) and Roxanne (Gr 4) are very happy in their new schools and are taking adjustments in their stride. 1975 Iris Quispel née Legh is living in Holland and has three daughters, two teenagers and a one year old. 1975 Josephine Banyard is married and living in Canada. Nicola (Nicky) Tomlin left St Mary's in 1974 in Std 8. She worked for a number of years and went back and matriculated from Damelin College in 1984, starting a BA at Wits in 1985. She emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1986, worked for ABC television for a number of years as a production manager, finally graduating in 1995 with a BA in English. She has 2 children, Ben (10) and Indira (3), and now works from home as a website editor for MSN in Australia. She misses her family in Durban and the Drakensberg. They live on the Isle of Wight in an 18th Century cottage with a beautiful gift shop below. Until recently, they also owned and ran a little restaurant. They have two children, Katherine (22) who works for a travel agency in Sussex and Jonathon (17) who attends agricultural college in Newport. 1970 Jeannie Comrie née Baikie is living in Johannesburg and is married to Graeme. She works at Hospice and teaches English part-time to under-privileged people. 1970 Merle Decot née Manning is married to Daniel and lives in France. She Has two sons aged 24 and 25.
Felicity Clegg (nee Greene 1968) is a Hot Air Balloon Pilot. She flies passengers for Airtrack at Muldersdrift and has a workshop where she repairs balloons and carries out the necessary tests on them. With her South African colours she has represented the country in Japan, Austria and France and has flown in Britain, America and the Seychelles. She was invited to represent South Africa in a major balloon festival "The Flight of 12 Nations" in Albuquerque in 2000. She was able to borrow a balloon made in the colours of the South African flag. The thrill of ascending solo to the national anthem of South African Anthem was enormous. In August 2001 she won the Ladies' World Cup for hot air ballooning in France. Diana Larkan works for a large law firm in downtown Toronto, Canada. She has an unusual job in that she works 12 hour shifts, 3 hours a week from 6pm to 6am! There are about 600 lawyers in the Toronto office alone - a very large law firm! She owns a little cottage about two hours from Toronto so she commutes on a weekly basis. Her parents own a small marina nearby along the Trent-Severn waterway system where she helps out when she is not in town. She is very happy in Canada but misses friends and family in South Africa. Wendy Schmidt (nee Hawkins 1974) and her sister, Carol (now du Preez), spent many happy years at St.Mary's. They lived in Inkonka Road, and spent many mornings running like mad up the road as they heard the school bell ringing.!!! In those days there was only the front driveway, so they used to dash in at the entrance where one crosses over to the hockey field..... Liezel Barbuto (nee Lane 1989). She is now living in America, Lincoln Nebraska and is married to Dr. John E. Barbuto from Boston, Massachusetts. They have a wonderful little boy who is now 20 months old and have another one on the way - due on June 25 2003. She is the Director for Human Resources Services for a consulting firm. She does Organizational Development work and specializes in Organizational Behavior, building and revamping the Human Resources Infrastructures for various organizations. She remembers really enjoying Mrs. Johnson's religion class and Mrs Billings math class. Lucy Laing (1993). Lucy has been living in Cape Town for the past four years and is currently the deputy editor on Divestyle magazine, a job that has plunged her into the icy Cape waters as well as taking her to warmer climes. In May 2002, Lucy was awarded a Mondi Award of Excellence for industry coverage on her previous title, Pursuit. Lucy recently became engaged to Michael Olden and they will be married in Cape Town in April 2003. She has retained her love of music and resumed voice training this year. Caroline du Plessis (nee Laing) (1986) married John-Paul at the St. Mary's chapel in 1992 and they now live in London with their two children, Maxine (4) and David (just born). Cathie Webster (nee Barnett 1967) is living in Australia. She and her husband Quentin have retired from teaching after 30 years and have opened a picture framing shop. Shannon Glasspoole (1996): After matriculating Shannon travelled to London to take up her studies after winning a scholarship to study at Trinity. She has had a highly successful and illustrious four years while completing her degree and was the winner of numerous coveted awards, competitions and bursaries. Shannon has been incredibly blessed and continues her violin career playing in a professional quartet. She also works for an organisation that fosters the development of music in schools. Her job involves both teaching and organising music workshops and liasing between Orchestra and music centres. Her company is sponsoring her further studies at the Guild Hall School of Music.
